I am not related to the people in these notices, but I copied these articles when I was checking this paper for other people, and thought someome researching Forsyth County residents might be able to use this information. *** James D. Jackson was born October 11th, 1834, in Morgan County, Georgia, where he resided until a few years ago, when he removed to Forsyth County. In July, 1861, he joined the “Home Guards,” Company D, 3d Regiment, Ga. Vols., at Portsmouth, Va. This brave and patriotic soldier fell at Malvern Hill, in the darkest hour of that terrific battle. Being shot through the head, he died without a struggle, with his gun grasped in his hands, in the act of firing – as he was found the next day, when consigned to his temporary resting place, by his fellow soldiers on that bloody and memorable field. All that serves to make an upright, honorable and magnanimous, Christian-hearted gentleman was possessed by this patriot – soldier. And when that brave heart was stilled in death, no purer spirit winged its was to an unknown world, on that dark day, and no more devoted friend and lover of his country was left to battle in Freedom’s cause. J.W.J. Atlanta Intelligencer, 2 October 1862, p.3 *** Died. At her father’s residence in Forsyth County, Ga., on the 25th of May last, Mrs. Allen, wife of Mack Allen of California, and daughter of Asa and Sarah Vaughn. Mrs. Allen was a lady of unblemished character and unusual worth. None knew her but to love her. Industrious, kind and smooth tempered. She leaves a promising son of some 12 summers, an aged father, and many other relatives and friends to mourn her untimely death. W.D.B. Recorder at Milledgeville please copy. Died, near Cumming, Forsyth County, Ga., on the 20th of May last, Mrs. Sarah A. Vaughn (and her infant child), wife of Hamilton L. Vaughn, member of Captain J.B. Wallis’ Company (A), 2d regiment State troops. W.D.B. Recorder at Milledgeville please copy. Drowned, on Sunday morning, the 30th of May last, in the mill pond of A.J. James, in Forsyth County, Ga., Jacob Pirkle, of some 15 summers, son of Mrs. Sarah Pirkle. How sudden does life become extinct by one unguarded step, of jumping into deep water by one that cannot swim. W.D.B.
