Knowing the ongoing interest in Cherokee Indians and the Trail of Tears, I thought the following abstracts might be of interest to someone. Given the amount of research on early Forsyth County, I realize these may already have been published, but just in case they are useful:

Correspondence of the Eastern Division Pertaining to Cherokee Removal, April – December 1838.
National Archives Microcopy 1475

Ree1 1:

Frames 160+
From Major S. Churchill, 3rd Rgt, to General Winfield H. Scott
Kellogg’s Store, Forsyth Co., Geo., May 8, 1838

“ … hope to discharge the regt. At this place on the 11th …”
[The letter is mostly about other matters, the writer had only been at Kellogg’s store for a brief period.]

Reel 1, frames 287+

Capt. James Wood, Geo. Volunteers to Lt. John McKay, 20 May 1838
Fort Campbell, Forsyth Cty, May 20, 1838

In speaking about the Indians in Forsyth County, he says “… They are waiting on [Chief] Ross, and can do nothing untill they see or hear from him …”

And adds: “They do not manifest any hostility on their part & say they are friendly to the whites, & will not harm them nor will they seek to hide themselves in the forest or mountains. They are making no preparations for their removal and utterly refuse to sell or in any way dispose of their stock or other effects …”

Reel 2, frames 178+

List of Cherokees who have received commentation of transportation and yet remain to be emigrated, 28 August 1838
[with numbers in families]
Martin Brannum 16 Forsyth Coty, Ga
[This person's last name may be Brannon, as shown in the 1840 census?]
Rance Bird Harris 7 "
Robert Rogers 10 "
Charlotte Vickery 6 "
Charles Harris 11 "
William Harris 7 "
Joseph H. Collins 3 "
John Rogers 22 "

As far as I know, none of my Forsyth County relatives are related to any of these folks. My ancestors include Absalom Reese and his parents, Jacob and Susan Reese. Other early relatives include Joshua Holden, Elijah Holden, Ratliff Boone, Samuel M. Reese, and Osborn Hagood (or Haygood).

I hope this helps someone.
