Yes, this is indeed the family that I was looking for. I have since been able to find out a bit more information on them. Born Karl August Steiner, Charles August was my great-great-grandmother, Henrietta Steiner's, younger brother. I learned about him through court records in a very involved case involving Henrietta, Henrietta's brother-in-law Leopold Schmidt, and Henrietta's daughter Hattie. I still don't know exactly what became of Charles August and his wife Lillian. Here is what I have in my "Notes" section for him: MARRIAGE License issued 17 Feb 1885, executed 18 Feb 1885 by Rev. W.E. Porter. August Steinere and Lillian B. Moody. BRUNSWICK (GA) CITY DIRECTORY, 1901/2 Charles A. Steiner, waterman, 819 C Street CENSUS 1900 - Brunswick, Glynn, GA - Charles Steiner, b. Jun 1854 in Germany, immigrated 1871, waterman; Lilian, b. Feb 1858 in GA, married 15 years. Nothing is listed in the column for number of children. 1910 - Manhattan, New York, NY - Charles A. Steiner 55, widower, immigrated 1871, accountant - a lodger in an apartment of Louis and Bertha Hirschberg. [I am not certain that this is the same person, but age and immigration certainly fit.] NOTE On 16 Jul 1901, Henrietta (Steiner) Speckart wrote in a letter to Leopold Schmidt, regarding her return to America: "... My plan is to go from New York to Niagara Falls and then from there to Brunswick, Georgia to visit my brother August..." In a letter of 4 Jul 1904: "Uncle August is located and working hard every day at the brewery." [This would be the Olympia Brewery in Olympia, Washington.] In 1906 letters from Hattie Speckart to Katharina (Steiner) Engel, Hattie wrote that when Uncle Leopold returns August will return to his farm in Georgia. Hattie later wrote that Henrietta was upset about Uncle August. Henrietta had loaned him over $5000 and gave him $300. August had received cash "when he sold the business" and with it he bought a farm. Evidently August felt "Mama is to blame for the sickness of his wife and Uncle Leo that his business did not go." [It is assumed that August must have been living in Washington or Oregon and had a business there.] If you have anything further on this family, I would love to know about them.
