There has been a good deal of confusion regarding the two Nancy Jarrells of Greene County, Georgia. First we have Nancy Jarrell who married William Reid in 1828, and second, Nancy Jarrell who married Early J. Caldwell in 1848. Most Jarrell genealogies show the wife of Early J. Caldwell as daughter of Redden Jarrell. However, the information I have found indicates that this is incorrect and that it was actually Nancy, wife of William Reid, who was Redden Jarrell’s daughter. 1. Nancy Jarrell married William Reid February 6, 1828, Greene Co., GA. She was born March 1812 (per 1900 census) in Greene County, died August 13, 1906, Taliaferro Co., and is buried in Crawfordville Baptist Cemetery. Her tombstone reads: NANCY JARRELL WIFE OF WM. REID DIED AUG. 13, 1906 AGE 94 YRS. Nancy and William Reid had a large family of children and named one son, Redden Jarrell Reid. Two of their daughters are buried in a small cemetery in Greene County with Redden (spelled Redding on tombstone) and Martha Jarrell. This cemetery is said to be "in Holcomb Taylor's yard" near White Plains. The two Reid daughters buried there are Cornelia Reid, d. March 2, 1859, age 11, and Mary Ann Reid, d. Aug. 11, 1853, age 17. Both of these girls are listed in the 1850 census as children of William and Nancy (Jarrell) Reid. In addition, there was a lengthy article in The Augusta Chronicle, dated April 20, 1901, telling of a birthday celebration given at White Plains for Mrs. Mary S. Jarrell (who was widow of Elisha P. Jarrell, a son of Redden Jarrell). In the list of guests is the following: “. . . Dr. R. J. Reid, accompanied by his mother, Mrs. Nancy Reid, of Crawfordville . . . . Mrs. Reid is sister-in-law of Mrs. Jarrell, and is but one year younger. A rare thing it is to spend a day with two who have reached this advanced age. . .” This seems pretty solid evidence that Nancy (Jarrell) Reid was sister of Elisha P. Jarrell and therefore, a daughter of Redden and Martha (Peek) Jarrell. 2. The second Nancy Jarrell married Early J. Caldwell, March 27, 1848, Greene Co., GA. She was born about 1828-1829, probably Greene Co. In the 1850 census, Early J. Caldwell and his wife Nancy are living in Hancock Co., GA. His age is shown as 28, and wife Nancy is age 21, which would give her the estimated birth date of 1828-1829. Living with them was a Mary Jarrell, age 55. (She might have been Nancy’s mother?) A careful study of census records holds some clues. In 1830, the youngest female listed in Redden Jarrell’s household was between the age of 5-10. (Nancy (Jarrell) Caldwell would have been about 1 or 2 in 1830.) In 1840, the only female living with Redden Jarrell was between age 40-50. (Nancy would have been about 11 in 1840 so if she was Redden’s daughter, she should have been listed.) Going back to the 1850 census and Mary Jarrell, age 55, living with Early J. & Nancy Caldwell, the 1840 census shows a Mary Jarrell as head of household. Listed with her was one female between age 10-15 (just right to be Nancy), one female, age 20-30, and one female age 40-50 (Mary). However, at this time, there is nothing to prove or disprove that Mary Jarrell, listed in the 1840 census, was the same Mary who was living with the Caldwells in 1850. In summary, by studying the 1830 and 1840 census records for Redden Jarrell, there is no female that would fit the age of Nancy (Jarrell) Caldwell. If she was closely related to Redden Jarrell, she would fit much better as a granddaughter.
