The Thomas Carters of VA, SC, and GA
Posted by: Michele Steve Date: January 23, 2002 at 18:15:53
  of 1178

I have compiled this information regarding the Thomas Carters of VA, SC, and GA. I'd like to verify the accuracy first of all. Then, at the end, I have a question regarding one of Presley's children.

Thomas CARTER (1634 – 1700) was married to Katherine Dale (1652 – 1703).

Thomas CARTER (1672 – 1733), s/o Thomas and Katherine, was married to Arabella Williamson.

Daniel CARTER (1700 – 1759), s/o Thomas and Arabella.

Thomas CARTER (1725 - ?), s/o Daniel, left Lancaster, VA and settled in Edgefield County, SC.

Thomas CARTER (1750-1810), s/o Thomas, was born in Lancaster Co., VA. He was married, 1771, to Mary Elizabeth “Molly” CHILTON (1753-1792), daughter of Stephen and Judith Hobson, of Northumberland Co., VA. Thomas Carter was living in Edgefield District 96, SC at the beginning of the Revolutionary War, enlisting in a SC Regiment. He was at the siege of Augusta and fought in this siege with SC and GA soldiers under Col. Elijah Clarke who commanded all soldiers there at the time. He received land for his service in Hall Co, GA (formerly Franklin Co., GA) in 1785. He died there in 1810. DAR application show children for this marriage to be Thomas, Mary and John.

Thomas CARTER, Jr. (1772 – 1857), s/o Thomas and Molly, was born in 1772 in Edgefield District, South Carolina and died in July 1857 in Hall County, Georgia. In 795, he married Sarah Cothran, born January 1776 in Edgefield District, South Carolina and died after 1857 in Hall County, Georgia. This family appears in the 1830 Hall Co., GA Census.

********
Presley CARTER (1800 – 1860), s/o Thomas and Sarah, was born about 1800 and died before 1860. He married Barbary LNU. This family is listed in the 1850 Hall Co., GA Census with the following entry: Pressley Carter, 50, B. (female), 49, T.J.T (male), 24, Catherine (wife of TJT), 26, T.H., 19, R. (female), 16, O. (female), 14, M (female), 11. This would account for known children Orphy Ann Carter (married Charles Newton Wade), etc. This family also appears in the 1830 Hall Co., GA Census.
********

John Tillman Carter (1796 – 1881), s/o Thomas and Sarah, was born June 1796 in Hall Co, GA (formerly Franklin Co., GA) and died November 04, 1881 in Habersham County, Georgia. He married Catherine Starnes June 01, 1817 in Franklin Co., GA, born January 27, 1797 in Franklin Co., GA and died January 11, 1862 in Habersham County, Georgia. J.T. is buried at Enon Baptist Church, Lula, GA. John and Catherine are listed in the 1850 Hall Co., GA Census with the following entry: Tilmon, 51, Catherine, 51, M (female), 18, T.J. (male), 16. This would account for daughter Mary and son Thomas J.

Here's my question: Presley Carter's family is listed in the 1850 Hall Co., GA Census. T. H. is listed as a son, age 19. I would like to document that this son's name is actually Tilman Henry Carter. If that is true, this would be the missing branch of my family as Tilman is my gggg-grandfather. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
