I am posting what information I have in hopes others will do the same, and I may, perhaps learn something new about the Pritchetts. Henry Carter and Nancy Jane Pritchett, Jr., are my direct ancestors. Henry Carter was born about 1803 in Virginia and died after 1880, probably in Carroll County, Arkansas, where he appeared on his last census. Nancy Jane Pritchett, Jr./Carter was born about 1806, reportedly in Missouri, though censuses also say Tennessee. She died between 1860 and 1870, probably in Douglas County, Missouri, where the family had been living. According to St. Louis, Missouri probate records, the parents of Nancy Jane Pritchett, Jr. are: James Pritchett and Nancy Pritchett. I do not know the birthdate and place of James Pritchett, but in 1797, when he wrote his Last Will and Testament, he was living in Hancock County, Georgia. Georgia was not yet a state. Some of his children were named in his will, as follows: LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF JAME PRITCHETT: In the Name of God, Amen I, James Pritchett, of the State of Georgia, County of Hancock, being in perfect mind and memory, make this my Last Will and Testament. My estate and effects I bequeath and dispose of in manner and form following: First, I will that all my debts be paid and then that my wife, Nancy Pritchett, have the use of all the residue of my estate during her widowhood or life or untill William Fairchild and John Ragan, whom I hereby constitute and appoint the hole and sole executors of this my last will and testament shall think proper to dispose of the said estate or any part thereof for the use of my five children (to-with: Peter Pritchett, James Pritchett, John Pritchett, Sarah Pritchett, and Jesse Pritchett, then the said estate to be equally divided between my wife and the above mentioned children; either by selling the said estate or otherwise as the said executors shall think proper. Given under my hand and seal this 27th day of May, 1797. James Pritchett. Signed, sealed, published and declared by the within named Testator to be his last will and Testament in presence of us who subscribed our names in the presence of the said Testator. William Barron Resea (or Rebea) Mathews William (X) Waless At the time of his death in 1811 he was living at Point Labaddy/Labadie, District of St. Louis, Franklin County, (Missouri), Louisiana Territory and had more children than he had named in his will in 1797. Apparently all were adults in 1811, as there are no guardians shown signing for any of them. James Pritchett's will was probated in St. Louis. The probate records are online at: http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/stlprobate/images.asp?id=2216&party=Pritchett,%20James&cas e=00087&date=1811&reel=C%2027452 St. Louis Probate Court Digitization Project, 1802 - 1900 Louisiana Territory Children/Survivors named in his probate are: Betsy Pritchett, daughter, died before him, before she was 21 Nancy Pritchett, wife Peter Pritchett, son (I believe he was the oldest) John Pritchett, son James Pritchett, son Sion S. Pritchett, son Jesse Pritchett, son (Sion and Jesse were the two youngest sons. Sarah "Sally" Pritchett who apparently was married twice, once to George Farmer and once to Jacob Swafford. Nancy Pritchett, Jr., who was married to Henry Carter, and in 1825, they were living in Perry County, Tennessee, although they later also returned to Missouri. In 1811, one Pritchett child lived in Arkansas Territory, one ived in Illinois Territory, one lived in Perry County, Tennessee, and several lived in Missouri. They seem to have spread out quite a bit. Along with the usual household goods and agricultural equipment one would expect to see in an estate in 1811, James Pritchett's estate inventory included surveying equipment and a book on surveying. It is not known if he was a surveyor, but it might explain why he shows up always in the frontier territories, prior to statehood. There is not much available online about the Pritchett family, but there are a few things: James Pritchett is mentioned in "Territorial Papers - Louisiana-Missouri Territory" 1806-1814, Volume XIV pages 471-479, at http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/mo/land/1811pet.txt James, John and Peter Pritchett were among the signers of a Petition to Congress From Inhabitants of the Territory dated September 9, 1811 (see above). Missouri History, 1908, A History of Missouri, Vol 2, History of the Exploration and Settlement of Missouri Chap. 12 Mentions James Pritchett, 1800, early settler, upper Louisiana Territory. Chap. 13 mentions James Pritchett as an early settler, no details online. The online index mentions the following Pritchetts: Antoine James John Nancy Peter Prudentia Thomas Other early Missouri settlers named, in various capacities, in James Pritchett's probate file are: William Russell, Administrator John Sullins Luke Decker John Maupin ? Bouls David K. Price Thomas Gibson Robert Young Fields Pruitt Benjamin Bannister James Long William M. Fullerton Samuel Dunkin William Long James Brown John M. Meckle, appraiser Leonard Farron or Farrow, appraiser John W. McGirk Charles Phillips Taylor Polk James Stephens Sutton Farrar Nicholas Burckheistt Another early Missouri settler was Eli Musick. Jame's Pritchett's granddaughter, Elizabeth Pritchett, married a William Musick, probably related, not sure.
