Capt. John Peek of Hart County, GA was my great-great- grandfather. His son, Dr. William Woodson Peek (b. 1851
Asheville, Buncombe Co., NC; d. 1919 Louvale, Stewart Co.,GA), was my great-grandfather. I have some information
on Capt. John Peek that was in "The Hartwell Sun" newspaper
between May 9, 1877 and March 5, 1896. The last date was the date that Capt. John Peek's obituary appeared in that
newspaper. I have the information on the Peek family that
is in the Hart Co. history by Baker. Are you a descendant
of Capt. John Peek and his wife, Mary A. Woodson? I think
that Mary A. Woodson Peek was a daughter of Matthew Woodson, who was on the 1820-1840 Buncombe Co., NC Censuses, but I don't know the name of her mother. I think the 1870 Census of Hart County, GA shows that Mary A. Woodson's father was born in Virginia and her mother was born in North Carolina. Matthew Woodson of Buncombe Co., NC was probably a son of Samuel Woodson and wife, Sarah Mills, who were said to have moved from Virginia to Kentucky. Samuel Woodson was a son of Rev. Matthew Woodson and wife, Elizabeth LeVillain/LeVillian. Sarah Mills Woodson was a daughter of William Mills and wife, Elizabeth Fontaine. All of this seems to fit because it has
been passed down in the family of Dr. W. W. Peek that he
was partly of French descent. I don't know much about Capt. John Peek's other children. I know that Dr. Peek had a brother, Walker Peek. My father thought that Walker
Peek (Samuel Walker Peek) was a banker. My cousin obtained
some information stating that he was a judge. Among their
14 children (2 of those died as infants), Dr. Peek and his
wife, Frances Margaret Johnston, had one named Samuel Walker Peek, after his brother, and one named Susan Alice Peek, after his sister, Susan Alice Peek Linder. Let me know if you want the names of all 14 of Dr. Peek's children. I found a little information on Capt. Peek's
Confederate service on the Internet and I have a little on
his Redmond, Stewart & Shockley ancestry. I don't have anything on George Peek's wife, Elizabeth Spencer.
