Elbert Co., GA Marriage Book "A", 1836-1867 Joseph D. Reed and Elizabeth Smith, 18 Sep 1846, p. 203 Joseph D. Reed and Susan Rush, 31 Mar 1852, p. 322 Hart Co., GA Will Book "A", 1854-1894 .....Will of JESSIE SMITH: Wife, Elizabeth Smith. My own children: Nancy Ann Reed to receive the portion that would have been coming to her mother, Elizabeth Reed, had she lived. If my wife should inter-marry with any other man then my estate to be equally divided between her and our children. Dated: 19th June 1860 - Proved: 6 Aug. 1860. Witnesses: Wm. Bowen, Hart Co., GA; John H. Johnson, Hart Co., GA, (there is more but my copy has been cut off) 1850 Census, Elbert Co., GA (1180 households all listed as being in "The Elbert District") Smith, J......44...M E.................43...F M.C.............20...F N.M.............19...F M.A.............17...F C.M............16...F J.J...............15...M E.J..............14...F W.B.............12...M L.E.................8...F J.W................6...M M?(U?)..........4...F Reade, J.D....30...M This is how I would interpret this: Joe Reed married Elizabeth Smith in 1846. They had a daughter, Nancy Ann, born in 1847. Elizabeth died. Joe was living with the Smith family (Elizabeth's parents) in 1850, while his daughter, for whatever reason, is living 29 households away with Nancy Marett (which is really not so far away, considering there were 1180 households in the district). Joe marries Susan Rush in 1852. Nancy Ann remains with Nancy Marett. In the 1860 Census, there is no sign of Susan Rush Reed. Joe is boarding with the James Allen family in Hartwell and working as a mechanic. Nancy Ann is living with Nancy Marett. Mary Smith, Nancy Ann's aunt, is living with Nancy Marett also. A Milly Reed, age 5, along with three older Rush children, are living with William Hunt in the Oak Bower community of Hart Co. Could Milly be the daughter of Joe and Susan? Are the Rush children Susan's children by a previous marriage? Or could they be cousins? Hope this has answered some of your questions. Good Luck. Bobbie Notify Administrator about this message?
