Source: History of the Sarepta Baptist Association of GA and Historical Sketches of Churches Composing the Association published by the Association in 1943. Pages 94 and 95. Gives an account of the Oconee Baptist Church "The first to be organized was her oldest sister, Cabin Creek in 1796; next Grove Level and Candler's Creek in 1802; Black's Creek and Crooked Creek, 1803; Academy, 1812" and goes on to list those founded after 1812. I am more familar with Candlers Creek now Unity Christian Church located on Unity Church Road and Unity Church Circle in Jackson County, GA. The original church land was purchased from Archibald York in behalf of the Baptist Church of Candler Creek by Ambrose Yarorough, John Hammons, John MOore and Owen J. Bowen. Nov 5, 1810 Deed Book E, 1808-1812. Owen Jones Bowen, my great great grandfather purchased land from Thomas Wray (Ray) and his wife, Rebecca for $800 for 400 acres bounded SW by land of Bowne <NW by Gunnels, NE by Jack, SE by Hawkins, togther with houses, buildings etc. Wit: George Nash, Jr., IsraelFowler, George Nash, Esquire appeared before John T. Lewis, Deputy Clerk, on Apr 26, 1808 in Pendleton Dist, SC. Rec Oct 8 , 1808. Deed Book E, 1808-1812. Candler's Creek was active until about 1900 when the population moved and it was disbanded. Unity Christian Church bought it and it has been an active church since then. The old church was replaced with a new building in recent years. The cemetery has markers that date back probably to the earliest Chandler's Creek days. I was there last week and while there are still several graves marked with field stones and two that are very unusual, most of the earliest ones that were broken and in danger of being lost, were replaced by a considerate church member with ground markers. None of the older markers have inscriptions that can be read if indeed they ever had inscriptions. Many more recent (ca 1900's) markers are present. I have in my possession copies of letters from the Bowen and David families containing references to Candler's Creek Baptist Church. I understand Candler's Creek in the earliest days was known as Shoals Creek so you might find some reference to Shoals Creek in some early deeds.Unity Christian Church is a very beautiful church located on a hill close to the road in rural Jackson County. Bowen owned land touching Candler's Creek and his sons then received it.
