Could you give some more detail to your story? Even genealogical detectives would have a hard time working with the few facts you've provided. Do you have a marriage record of some kind for Frank Thornton and Anna Irwin or are you going on someone's memory? Do we assume that he died between 1892 and 1898? (Divorces were very difficult to obtain around that time). Whom did Anna marry as her second husband? It would helpful to know that just to look her and Alice up in 1900 and 1910 and to see what is said about Alice's father. I've tried searching with just “Alice Thornton” and don't see her anywhere. And then, do you know if Alice lived very long and if she married? Information about her father might show up on other documents.

The name “Frank” could be short for Francis or Franklin. I've seen Franklin a lot, very often as a middle name--Benjamin Franklin Jones, William Franklin Smith, etc.--and if so, records can vary, using either the first or second name.
