Navigation on the Ogeechee River

Ladies and Gents,

I am writing a magazine article about the Ogeechee River and I am curious about the "head of navigation" on the Ogeechee River. Did boat traffic ever go up the river as far as the Louisville vicinity? If not, how about Colemans Lake, Midville, Millen or points southeast?

I've paddled the Ogeechee and the upper half is a twisting, narrow, often shallow river with many deadfalls. If boats ever went above Millen, it must have been a monumental task to keep the channel free of obstructions. But it's possible as in the early 1800s, Georgia spent alot of money to keep the Oconee River open to Milledgeville and points north.

Any replies will be welcome.

I am also interested in information about the Ogeechee, Midville, and Scarboro.

Sincerely,

Dan Roper
