I have recently found a great great grandfather that xi have been searching for for over 25 years!! His name is Starling Thompson (sometime spelled Sterling and Thomson) He was born and lived in S.C. then migrated to Augusta around 1854. He was there for the 1860 census and he married a woman named Antionette Jones (second wife) They disappeared from Augusta with the only trace a record of her church letter being moved to a Baptist church in Macon Ga. He was a methodist and there was no record of him in her church in Augusta or Macon. Some years later she returned to Augusta and lived in the Widow's Home on Greene St. where she worked as a matron and eventually died in the 1890's. I recently came across a reference to Lincoln county in connection with a son of Starling's. As I have done a thousand times before, I looked there for any trace and I was shocked to find him as a resident of Doubble Branch during the 1870 census. He is listed as 68 years old with a woman with him named Susan aged 30 and a boy William aged 5. I haven't seen the actual census so i don't know if this is another wife or a daughter although his family is well documented while in Augusta and there was no daughter named Susan.
I was wondering if there is anyone in Lincolnton willing to look for a marriage certificate for Starling and Susan, a divorce for Starling and Antionette or a land sale for Sterling in the time period of 1860-1879. I found a legal notice in the paper stating his property was going to be sold at a sheriff's sale in Jan 1880. The notice was in the Dec 1879 paper and states he is deceased at the time of the notice. I am really anxious to find his date of death or place of burial or church affiliation...practically anything I can find out about him would be great. I am unable to travel right now due to illness of my daughter and any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you..... Candace Jeffers Smith
