John Phillips was born in NC c. 1810. According to his obituary in Flat Creek Baptist Church (Fayette Co.) minutes he was in Newton Co., GA by 1826. He was on 1830 Newton Co., GA census. He married Louisa (maiden name unknown)probably before 1834 (first child 9 June 1834). John and Louisa were in Fayette Co GA (or nearby Campbell Co.) at least by January 1840 when they appear in Bethsaida Baptist Church minutes as joining the church. They are in Fayette Co at census time in 1840 and for the rest of their lives. His estate was administered in Fayette after his death in 1868.
I do not know Louisa's maiden name. Some researchers have surmised that it may have been "Connor" based on the fact that there was a Louisa Connor on the rolls of the Newton Co. church of which John was a member. However, I have recently seen the administration of the estate of Thomas Dacus in Newton Co. in 1837 where a John Phillips took an equal share with Dacus' children in his estate. This leads me to think that the Dacus' heir John Phillips likely was a son-in-law and possibly this same John Phillips. I have not found a marriage record for John Phillips in Newton Co. Perhaps he and Louisa married in an adjoining county. If someone has access to marriage records in Walton, Morgaan or any other nearby county, I would be grateful if you would check those records to see if you find a marrige record for a John Phillips and Louisa ---------- in the early 1830s.
Thanks,
Anne Westbrook
