Posted By: Russ Hebert Email: Subject: JOHN DORRIS (b. GA) and MISS PAINTER (b. AL) and BUCHAN & WHITE Post Date: October 08, 2009 at 12:06:15 Message URL: http://genforum.genealogy.com/al/messages/35811.html Forum: Alabama Genealogy Forum Forum URL: http://genforum.genealogy.com/al/ JOHN DORRIS (b. GA) and MISS PAINTER (b. AL) and BUCHAN & WHITE I am looking for information on my great-grandparents, their descendants, and ancestors. Information on my grandfather's death certificate provides the name of my great-grandfather, John DORRIS, and the maiden name, but not the given name, of my great-grandmother, Miss PAINTER. The death certificate says John was born in Georgia, that Miss PAINTER was born in Alabama, and both lived in Alabama when their son, William Edward DORRIS, my grandfather, was born. Just WHERE in Alabama is an unknown. Time frame is: my grandfather was born in the 1870s (believed to have been June 7, 1874), so Miss PAINTER and John DORRIS would likely have been married some time before that. There is a possibility Miss PAINTER was Native American, probably Choctaw, though Cherokee is a possibility. I do not know whether John DORRIS and Miss PAINTER had additional offspring other than William Edward DORRIS, although given the practice of the time it is probable there were other children. None are known to have migrated to Louisiana with William Edward. By 1899, William Edward DORRIS, age ~25, was in Ouachita Parish (West Monroe) LA and that year married my grandmother, Mary Josephine (White) DORRIS, who was the daughter of Green and Elizabeth White of Natchitoches, LA. Almost nothing is known of his life prior to this marriage. [There is some, though inconclusive, evidence there were relatives from Arkansas, e.,g., the couple Robert Dorris and Addie [Kahn] Dorris (m. 24 July 1899, Ouachita Parish, Louisiana). I've had no success finding anything on John DORRIS And Miss PAINTER on Georgia or Alabama census, marriage, birth, or other data. ADDITIONALLY, I'm looking for ancestry information on my great-great-grandparents HECTOR & ELIZABETH BUCHAN, who migrated from NC, GA, AL area before ~1840 to Louisiana. Their daughter Elizabeth married GREENBERRY WHITE and they were my great-grandparents. Elizabeth had brothers: David, James A., and possibly John Buchan. Greenberry White migrated from AL, possibly via Mississippi, to LA prior to 1850. His mother's name was Susan, father's name unknown to me, brothers were Drewery/Drury D. White and possibly John J. White. Any information you may have would be appreciated. Russ Hebert Notify Administrator about this message?
