BUT I found a Nancy JOHNSON **Geraldus Batts married (2) to Nancy (JOHNSON) DUKE in 1844 in Carroll Co, TN. They had two daughters before he died in 1848/1949.
SO WHO DOES THIS NANCY UNKNOWN BELONG TO?????

*Geraldus/Geraldas Batts inherited a bunch of land when his father died.. still fuzzy on this.. He was under age in 1809 but was married to Betsy by 1815 when her father died. She was listed in her fathers will in 1815 as being Elizabeth Batts.

Benjamin died while Geraldus was still under age. Joshua Lawrence was appointed his guardian. Joshua was Elizabeth Knight's uncle.
NOTES: This must mean that Jesse Knight father of Elizabeth was married to UNK Lawrence, who was sister to Joshua Lawrence.

***Historical Paper online: Geraldus and Elizabeth "Betsy" Joyner had several illigitmate children, and had a Martha as one, but their names got changed to Batts, later. And, that this Elizabeth and Geraldus went to Alabama at some point, and he to KY, later (don't know if alone or with her).

BATT, JOSEPH, inventory taken by Joshua Lawrence, exr. after Nov. Ct. 1807 included many accounts due estate, Feb. Ct. 1808. Additional inventory taken by the exr., May Ct. 1808. Accounty of sale by Joshua Lawrence and Isaac Batts, exrs., held Dec. 22, 1807. William Batts, Joseph Batts, Isaac Batts, Elizabeth Batts, Sarah Batts, Salley Batts, Polly Batts, and Garry Batts were buyers.
A tract of land, 213 acres lying on Deep Creek, was sold, as well as a 200 acre tract of pine woods, a 160 acre tract on Oozen Springs, half of the Crocker's Hole tract, and a sane (seine) place with three acres of land, May Ct. 1808. Account current with the exr.
The balance of the estate was to be divided among his six children (not named) according to the will, Feb. Ct. 1809.
Account current of his orphan, Geraldus Batts, with his guardian, Joshua Lawrence, May C. 1809.

I cannot make out Bite's name very well on the census, but it definitely begins with a "J". I realize that the date of Sept 1861 slightly conflicts with the birthdate of John & Julia's son, James Newton Duke on 8 FEB 1862. Although this is not documented, I believe that "Marion" or "Miron" Batts is Geraldus Batts, Jr., who you will find listed in the 1850 Hickman Co., KY census.
You will notice in Hickman Co., KY, 1850 that Geraldus M. Batts, Jr. is listed. He is a young married man with no children.
He is the son of Geraldus Batts, Sr. We assume his mother is Elizabeth Knight Batts, but we have not documented that.
We don't find him again listed by that name, but we do find "Miron" Batts in 1870 who is married to a Millie and lives next door to Jason Griffith. I feel sure he is Geraldus M. Batts, Jr. [see 1850 census, Hickman Co., KY] who was apparently widowed before marrying Millie. I have not found him in 1860.
Jennie Batts Walston is the daughter of Geraldus M. Batts, Jr. [Miron/Marion] and Millie Griffith.
I am not sure about the Millie Batts in 1900, but I think there is a good chance it is the same lady who is married to "Miron" Batts in 1870.
Geraldus Marion BATTS & Millie GRIFFITH Children: At least 2 daughters: Jennie & Elizabeth BATTS *1870 census for Cuba, Graves Co., Kentucky, 'Miron' Batts is 39 farmer from Kentucky; with Millie 27; and Jennie 2. {p. 33 / 34 roll 464} NOTE: They are between William and Elizabeth Griffith [Millie's parents] with children Jesse, Eliza and Samuel; and [Millie's brother?] William Griffith 38.

The writing on the "2 children born 2 livnig" I don't think is from the original census taker and someone else wrote this as the handwriting is indeed different.

Jesse children: Allen, Elizabeth "Betsy", Martha, Temperence, Nancy, Peter, Lydia, Jesse B., Edwin, Lewis (And two not yet confirmed are Arthur & Sylvia (Knight)---These two maybe the children of Jesse & Mary.
A story thru the family is the reason Jesse left NC was because he had a mean stepmother. If you check the 1810 census in NC you will see that Mary could not possible be old enough to have been the mother of Allen who it is reported was born in 1790.
Allen KNIGHT m. Mary KITCHEN moved to TN
From Pam: Allen Knight s/o Jesse b 27 Jun 1790, d 25 Sep 1849, marr Mary Kitchen. He resided at Bedford Co., Tenn and lived here to his death.
Martha Knight married Mathia Miller
Temperence Knight married Thomas Haines.
