Richard was his middle name. His first name was Henry as shown below:

Edgecombe County Deed Book 00, pg. 169: Deed of sale from Robert Ruffin to Trustrem Rogers, 13 Feb 1760, witnessed by Henry Gay. Henry marked with an "R"

Edgecombe County Deed Book C, pg. 209: Deed of sale from John Scott to William Price, 17 Jan 1764, witnessed by Henry Gay. Henry marked with an "R"

Edgecombe County Deed Book 1, pg. 258: Deed of sale from Robert Ruffin to Henry Gay of Edgecombe Cty. 13 Feb 1759, 72 acres on Tyancokey Swamp. Court minutes from September 1761 state that deed of sale from Robert Ruffin to Richard Gay proved by Tristram Rogers [From: Edgecombe County NC Court Minutes, Book 1, by Weynette Parks Haun]

Edgecombe County Deed Book D, pg. 514: Deed of sale from Henry Gay to James Ricks, 20 Feb 1772, 72 acres on Tyancokey Swamp. Henry marked with an "R".

This doesn't tell us who his parents were but does open up more possibilities.
