I'd check for the birth records. 1) It is surprising how many people in local synagogs speak Russian. It is amazing how many Russian students there are in American Universities. A lot of them would be willing to translate the documents for you. 2) The nazis weren't led by General Sherman, so they didn't cut a wide path destroying everything in it. They were interested in vital records to check out who was what religion so they would of tended to preserve them. On the other hand local officials might of destroyed them for the same reason. I would never assume the civil and church records were destroyed, I'd write and let them tell me if they still exist or not.
Birth dates, like surname spellings, weren't that important to the people a century ago. They changed over time by chance or design.
