Ancestry has many other records besides census records. Right now ancestry is the only site that has all the US census records indexed and online.
Before anyone joins Ancestry, or any other site they pay to join, it is a good idea to look at see just what records they do have.
In recent years Ancestry hasn't had much that is helpful to me, but in the past, I have found several things, which I would have had to obtain elsewhere.
Part of what you are paying when you join sites like Ancestry, is the convenience of finding records on the site instead of spending hours looking to see where the records are kept and who to contact in order to obtain copies of them.
I am not saying that some of these same records can't be found online at other sites, but you do have to look for them.
