Tom, This subject has been disucssed numerous times on this forum. It's a relative question. If you find a lot of info on your surnames, it might be worth it. If you don't, it isn't worth it. I don't subscribe to ancestry.com. I've never found enough there to warrant the price. If census records is all you want it for, I would say it isn't worth the price. There are other ways of getting census information. Familysearch.org (the LDS site) has censuses online. Most libraries of any size have subscriptions to Heritage Quest, which has census images on line. One can generally go to the library and access it. I have access to Heritage Quest from home through the Texas State Library. The service is free of charge to Texas residents by merely registering with the TSL; however, out of state residents must pay for their subscription. For that matter, many libraries of any size have access to ancestry.com which you can use by visiting the library. There may be other free sources. I don't know because I am way past that in my research and now have to utilize what I can find on tax lists and hope they owned a little piece of ground or at least registered a poll. I despise working with tax lists, but if I want to know something bad enough, that's sometimes the only chance to find it. In my opinion, researchers who are not physically limited that spend all their time sitting at their home computers are missing a great opportunity to interact with other researchers. They can be found in libraries, state archives, and libraries that are voluntarily manned by county historical societies. The Caldwell County Historical Society operates a wonderful research library in Luling, Texas. I have visited a lot of small town libraries that have sections dedicated to genealogy. Check to see if any of these resources exist in your neck of the woods. If you believe that Ancestry might be your answer, why not commit a block of time to research and take a three-month subscription? It should cost you something in the neighborhood of $52. If you don't want to continue, just cancel before the renewal date. Good luck. Betty Notify Administrator about this message?
