Here is an answer to your question from a little different perspective. I have had a subscription to Ancestry.com for several years, and I get very disgusted and frustrated with them, but will continue to subscribe. My number one complaint with Ancestry.com is the inaccuracy of their transcriptions. However, as a volunteer researcher for our local genealogy society, I find it very helpful to be able to access census records from the entire U.S., as well as other types of records that I can't find locally. I also have a subscription to Heritage Quest, but there are drawbacks to it as well. HQ has no census records for 1830, 1840, or 1850. Also they do not index everyone in the household. If I was just researching my own family, I probably wouldn't or couldn't justify a subscription to Ancestry.com. As someone said, try it for a short time and see how it fits.
