I did my ancestry’s census records at the National Archives. Although, the Archives was free, parking, transportation and limited time at the microfilm reader made this time consuming. At that time many censuses were NOT indexed – the term ‘trolling’ means scanning through hundreds (maybe thousands) of pages looking for your ancestor. Once the census record was located you had to rewind and move the film and (yes maybe even wait) for the few readers equipped with printers. The employees would not help you figure out the printing readers (maybe a kindly other researcher would help you.) Copies were 50 cents/page often requiring multiple pages in order to print the records large enough to be readable. These pages then had to be taped together. There was no way to get a digital copy.
I spent thousands of hours and hundreds of dollars at the National Archives. Then there was gas cost, Metro fees, parking fees and parking tickets! For this reason I think the Ancestry subscription is cheap. No hobby is totally free and genealogy is no exception.
If you do not feel Ancestry, a convenience at a cost, is worth the money do not sign up. Yes, they make it difficult to stop a subscription.
