Prob. adding Parent and it linking with Child and tree

When I add parents to an existing entry the child is on the screen by forname. When I then click on child I cannot move back down the tree. If I take the new parents to the bin and then the child to the bin, the child is not deleted from the tree or the index. It is as if when entering the parent, the childs forname that appears is infact a different/dummy entry.

Anyone come across this before?
