Data Corruption & Loss - Gen. v8.5a File

Has anyone come across this problem when using Gen. v8.5a (plus patch)? This has similarities to the 'lost data' problem, but differs as follows :-
I fill in a person card, inputing data in all fields except 'Flags'.
On saving, any data entered in the 'Notes' field disappears.
The data in the 'ID' field shifts one place right.
The data in the 'Changed' field does likewise.
The data in the 'Mark' field disappears.
The file concerned contains 2014 persons. This has just started happening. I have not loaded any new software just prior to this occuring.
I have noticed that the index contains a completely blank line. This corresponds to a child card, which is now blank, is titled 'UNNAMED', and is for sex unknown. The blank line retains it's ID number, but the index 'GO' command fails.
Please Note that I have tried the 'msconfig fix' per Trevor RIX without success.
