Helen, My immediate advice would be to save a back-up file of your data, perhaps even make a second one just as a gedcom. Thus far I have not been successful in recovering my lost data. The file, entitle "Main File" is still there when I open the Generations software, but it is empty. This was realy a sudden glitch with the program, as I had never had any problems with it. It is more than disappointing to lose that much work. I'll be able to re-build the data, but it will take years, and much retracing of steps. Will upgrading to 8.5 help? I don't know. After my experience, I did some searching and found that others have had similiar problems like the one you and I have experienced. So far, the only answer is to switch to another program. That in itself is interesting, because when you check out what the most popular and best loved software programs are out there, Generations is not mentioned among the top 5. I am going to purchase another, more advanced program. At this point in my research, I don't need something user friendly, I just need something that is going to perform all I want it to, even if that means learning a new system. All the best!
