what are the benefits of upgrading to 8.5a?

I am currently running Generations 8.0 with Windows XP. I have been very happy with it. However, I am uncomfortable knowing there will be no further upgrades. What are the benfits of upgrading to 8.5a, I can find only that there are "fixes" and I should upgrade--what kind of fixes?

Also, has anyone changed to another program that has the search capabilities that Generations has? That is what I use most in the program. How do the other current programs compare with Generations search abilities and have you been happy with the new program???
