Gilmans of New York 1800s (formerly Vermont)
Posted by: Jorden M (ID *****8932) Date: April 05, 2012 at 16:04:05

I am looking for any information on the family of John M. Gilman and wife Susan who left Vermont for Hamilton County, NY between the late 1790s and 1815. I have not been able to trace the family back to Vermont, and records for them in Hamilton County prior to 1820 are very scanty. It seems that John M. had at least two sons, Hiram and Elias P., and perhaps a third, John M. Jr.. I am looking particularly for information on Elias P. and his father.

Elias P. Gilman married an Ann Satterlee, and they had a daughter Elizabeth who married a Charles Morehouse. I believe they are buried somewhere on the family farm, but I do not know if they had children and if so, where they ended up. Elias' father seems to have bought land along with the Satterlee family on a lot owned by Peter Smith, an Albany, NY land speculator. Some of the female family members married into the Letson/Fisher family, who ended up owning family land in the late 1800s.

If anyone knows of any information at all, I would be very grateful!
