In the March/April, 2006, "American Spirit" magazine, which is put out by the D.A.R., is an article on this woman:
"Born on June 16, 1738, to Giles and Sarah Updike Goddard, Mary Katharine had ink in her blood. Her father worked as a physician in New London, Conn., and a postmaster for the Royal Mail Service; her mother was a descendant of some of the first Rhode Island settlers - some of whom happened to be printers. Mary Katharine and her younger brother, William, were taught at home by their mother, a well-educated woman who made sure her children were exposed to Latin, French, and the literary classics of Shakespeare, Swift and Pope."
The article has more details about her life as a printer, and her position as Postmistress of Baltimore. She and her brother (pictured) had a falling out and never reconciled. She died in 1816, apparently never married, and left her estate to her slave Belinda Sterline, whom she also freed in her will.
I will send a copy of the article to anyone who can use it if you will e-mail me your home address.
