Thank you to Ian and Denny for your suggestions-
It looks like Pliny Earle Goddard- the famous anthropologist was "my" Pliny's father. My mom (who's 90) remembers that Pliny senior was quite wealthy, but evidently had divorced his wife and when he died in 1928, he left each of his children $1! I found an obituary for Pliny from American Anthropologist that mentions Pliny Jr., and that Pliny senior was "...personally frugel to abstemoniousness."
Pliny Jr. was working in a hospital where he met my Aunt Marian (a nurse). They were only married for about 2 years before getting divorced.
