Hello Goddards everywhere! And Julie, to you especially. ;-) I have had similar struggles with my 4G grandfather Aaron Godard, born 1770. One of his grandsons reported he was "from Connecticut" and there is a family tradition of a connection with the Hillyer family, so Connecticut is more than likely. Probable Connecticut relatives in this period were recorded variously as Godard, Goddard, Gosard, Gossard, Gozard and Gozzard. I'm afraid not much reliance can be placed on spelling in the 17th and 18th century. ;-) And yes, most of the given names are clearly English in origin. There is no documentation that I can find, however, nor can my umpty-umpth cousin Andy, who has also looked long and hard. Sigh. For some folks, records just didn't survive.
