I finally dug out my mother's account of the Gossard family history. I was delighted to see copies of most of the same letters that are posted in this forum. My great grandfather is Samuel Willis Gossard, son of William Milton Gossard and brother of William Allen Gossard. I had the Civil War discharge papers of my great grandfather, but they were distroyed in our house fire in 1990. However, my nephew, Daniel Gossard, son of my brother, Richard F. Gossard, was given Samuel Willis's medals from his Civil War campaigns. The discharge paperwork from that war was quite elaborate and listed all of the battles that he fought. Samuel lived and died in Chana, Illinois where he was postmaster for many years. He had two children Vivien Gossard Slear and Benjamin Guy Gossard, my grandfather. Ben Gossard married Effie Mae Shumaker and they had one son, Floyd E. Gossard, my father. In 1912 they were divorced. Ben remarried later and had another son Willis Gossard.
My brother Richard has four sons, Daniel, Scott, Jeffrey, and James and one girl Lisa. My brother Phil has one sone Neal Gossard. Guess the Gossard name will continue for a long time.
