Willard N. Alverson , of Tomah ,was a brave and gallant soldier in the Civil War and now one of the representative men of Monroe County. He was born in the Town of Ellisburg County, New York, March 11, 1828 and is the son of Willard and Lois (Greenleaf) Alverson, the father a native of Vermont and the mother of Columbus,
Chenango County, New York. Thomas Alverson, grandfather of subject (meaning Willard N. Alverson) was a Vermonter who emigrated from Vermont to New York in Oswego County and from there to Sheboygan, Wisconsin in the early days of the state.
Thomas Alverson died in Sheboygan, Wisconsin.
Willard Alverson and his wife lived in the old homestead in the State of New York their entire lives. Willard Alverson died at the age of 86 years of age. And Lois Alverson died age 78 years. They were the parents of seven children ; 3 sons and a daughter growing to mature years. Two sons (1892)are living, Willard N. is the eldest, William W. the 2ed surviving son who resides in Tomah, Monroe County, Wisconsin. The youngest son Knight D. lived near Homestead in New York state where he died January 1892.
The Greenleaf Family on the maternal side(Lois Greenleaf Alverson)of the family were formerly French Huguenots and descended from Edmund Greenleaf who was born 1600 Devonshire, England. Edmund married Sarah Dole and became a father to several children, born in England. In 1635 he came to America settling in Newborn. Massachusetts. He lived near Old Town Ridge, where for a time had a tavern, but he was by trade a silk dyer. About 1650 he removed to Boston, where he buried his wife and afterward married a widow, Mrs. Hill. Edmund Greenleaf died in 1671.
Article goes back to our subject ,Willard N. Alverson who enlisted April 28, 1861 in Company K, Twenty Fifth New York Volunteer Infantry for 2 years. He served with the regiment until May 1862, when he was discharged on account of disability. He was in active service all the time, while in the Army and experienced many hardships and privations. After returning home his health improved and on the 24th of December 1863 , he re-enlisted in Company F, Fourteenth New York Heavy Artillery and served with his regiment until August 26th of 1865. He was discharged under special order no.199, Headquarters Department of Washington D.C. he participated in the battles of the Fourteenth except Beck’s Station. He was in the battle of the Wilderness, Spottysylvania, North Anna River, Tolapotamy Creek, Bethesda Church, Cold Harbor, attack on Petersburg, where on the 30th of July his regiment had the honor to lead the assault on the Crater,_Poplar Grove Church, Hatcher’s Run, Fort Haskell and Steadman and the capture of Petersburg.
Mr. Alverson was married December 8,1856 to Miss Elizabeth Ann Lea a native of Benham, parish of Speen , Berkshire ,England who came to New York with her parents in 1849 and the following year to Wisconsin. Mr. and Mrs. Alverson have resided in Wisconsin since the war, and in Tomah since January 16, 1873.
Children listed are: Mrs. J.B. (Lois) Adams; Willard (Mary) Nelson Mrs. Oliver (Sarah Edith) Taylor. Nellie, Fred, Ralph and Frank Lucy E. died when she was 13 years old. And Harry E. died at 4 years old , both in 1872 of scarlet fever with but a short time between their deaths.
Willard N. Alverson came to Wisconsin in 1850 more than 40 years ago. At that time he visited Sheboygan, Milwaukee ,Wisconsin and also Chicago , Illinois . At that time the cities were just starting to form being in their infancy in 1850,
Wisconsin became a state in 1848; so Willard N Alverson was an early pioneer here.
