I live about 4 doors down from the Grierson house on Green Street in Pensacola. "Cap'n" James was living alone in the Grierson house when we arrived here in 1997, and remained there until his death in late September 2001. He was quite a character, everyone knew him as the guy who sold tomatoes. The house was completely bare, just a shell with bare bulbs and a HUGE fan in the summer, but it was regimentally tidy, with every can in the kitchen facing front and regulation corners on his bedding. Didn't like hot coffee but liked it iced, what he called "cold coffee". He had trouble getting around and for a time traveled the neighborhood on a riding lawnmower, waving his cane hello as he passed. Looked like Santa when I knew him, but his USMC photo shows he was quite a handsome guy when he was young. I made him a quilt, and he made me some jewelry out of paper clips and bought me a set of storage bowls at the dollar store. Always very sweet and quite a gentleman, and creative in a quirky way; the porch walls were a crazy quilt of funny things he'd cut out from newspapers and magazines. After he died his brother Reuel (pronounced "Rule") moved in, as of this writing I believe he still lives there but we've never met.
