Talk about name changes. My grandmother's maiden name was Geran, but changed to Garen when they left Ireland bound for America in 1873. They got as far as Newport, Wales, and because her mother had been so seasick on the voyage she refused to go on to America or return to Ireland. They remained in Newport. My grandmother, who was born in 1870, in Killarney, County Kerry, married in 1892, or thereabouts, and came to America in 1896. She always said that the original spelling of their name was Guerin. Her father was Cornelius Geran, born in Skibberean (don't know what county that was). Her mother's maiden name was Tuohey.

My grandmother had a number of brothers -- Patrick, Michael, James, Cornelius, William, and one sister, Ann.

Don't know if this helps you or not.

Mary
