For several years I've had an ongoing search for information on F. W. Guerin photography. I, too, have the photograph "Three Jacks" which is just as you described your picture. My gold frame is a little larger but the photograph is the same with the title "Three Jacks" and Copyright by Guerin 1890. I have been unable to find a appraiser with knowledge of old photographs to obtain an accurate value.
However, in 1990, I did have it appraised from a picture I sent to Alan S. Bamberger of San Francisco, CA, an art consultant, who wrote a column in Antique Week magazine. His remarks were: The photograph, most likely an albumin print, has some hand coloring and shows three boys sitting on a fence. It is entitled "Three Jacks" and signed lower left "Copyright by Guerin 1890" (acturally lower right). This photograph was probably taken by F. W. guerin, a St. Louis portrait and genre photorapher who was active from about 1880 through 1900. As to the value of this combination of items, the photograph is worth $200-400, the frame is worth $100-200. All estimates have been made from photographs of the items and not from personal inspections.
Keep in mind this was in 1990 so may have increased in value.
On the back of the frame is a stick on label that reads "St. Louis Moulding Factory", the second line of the label has a pencil number 608 or 658. The last two lines are partly missing but this is legible ____?____BER Moulding Company, d CASS AVE.
You can go on line to a site with one of Guerin's pictures "Unknown Girl" and find a trademark (?) on the 2nd page showing his information as a St. Louis photographer and record of his awards at the World's Exposition in Paris, 1878.
