I am trying to identify my great-grandfather's family. His name was Rudolph "Rudy" Guttmann. He was born in Huszt, Hungary (now in Ukraine). Family history has him comming to America around 1891 with his mother Fanny (nee Fried) and his younger brother Alex.
The story I heard, which came through Rudy's daughter-in-law (my grandmother) to her daughter-in-law (my mother) was that their family name was originally Bloch/Block and that the father either left them in Chicago or was left behind in Hungary. Then Fanny was rejected by his (Bloch) family in Chicago and ended up in New York, where she married Henry Guttmann.
What little documentation I have come up with is rather confusing. Fanny was a seamstress in NYC, and may have been married a couple of times. Rudy was a stockbroker in NYC, married Irene Starn, and had one son, Howard. Alex was an accountant. I cannot find him in the 1920 census. I know he had two children, Monroe and Elsie (married Wolfers).
I am hoping that someone can help me find out who Rudy's dad was. Was he Henry Guttmann (as Rudy listed on his SS-5) or a man named Bloch? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
