Right off hand I can't remember if we have something more definite than John's obit. But here is what it says .

The deceased was born in Juniata county, Pa., October 11, 1816. Here among the rugged people who at this time had settled this part of Pennsylvania he grew to manhood. Even during boyhood days he showed wonderful origionality, and was preeminent as a leader among his companions in all their sports and adventures. To him nothing was impossible. If he made up his mind to do a thing, failure was an unknown thought. At the age of 24 he was married to Miss Mary Albright, who lives to morn his loss. After four years in residence in Juniata county, during which time a daughter (Margaret) was born, they decided to cast their fortunes in what was then called the far west, and in the fall of 1844, in company with the Singmasters, they emigrated to Iowa. Singmasters having bought large tracts of land in Keokuk county, Mr. Stroup went to work for them. There is more.....

As for the Singmasters, they were prominent people in Keota, Keokuk county, Iowa. They had a large farming business, and had Champion Percheron horses.. I will look more to see what else I can find on them.

If my memory serves me, Donna D Clark [vcrw@juno.com], is a researcher of the Branch family, and lives around Iowa City, which is close to Keota. She might be more familiar with the history of the Singmasters.

Other than that, I may have to wait until I return to Keokuk county to do more research to find out more for you.

Everything we have says that John was born in Juniata county in 1816. Thanks for the info on Andrew. I will sursue that line to see if I can prove the relationship.

By the way, Mary Albright's mother was burried as Eve Boris, wife of E. Cameron at Richland, Iowa.
