The US Census for 1880 lists a Joseph(age 32) and Hannah (age 31) Haas with children names John (7), Kate(5), , and Alice (4 months). Joseph is employed as a Puddler which means he probably worked in a steel mill or iron works. Joseph was born in PA; his parents in Germany. Hannah was born in Ireland as were her parents. Most of the other people on the census page had Irish names. Since no street name is listed on the form, a good guess is that they lived in the south side of the city where many people worked in the steel industry, and were of Irish descent.
