An old copy of my family tree says the name was originally spelled Haasz and meant rabbit or hare, but the folks at immigrations didn't understand the spelling so it was left as Haas. The German double-ess character (like a printed capital B with extended left side) is no doubt what through them. It currently is rendered 'ss' in English, but was originally rendered 'sz'. I don't know if this helps or adds confusion--there it is for what it's worth.
