CATHRYN ELIZABETH
SCHWAUCH HAAS
Mrs. Haas passed away Tuesday, August 7th after succumbing to a protracted illness. Kay, as friends and family knew her, was born in Austin on December 2, 1925. Her grandfather, Walter Heierman, settled in Austin in the 1870's, and her mother married Rudolph Schwauch of Wallberg, Texas. Kay spent her formative years living in the University of Texas area and graduated from Austin High School. In the late 1940's, she attended the University of Texas at Austin, and graduated with a B.S. in Bacteriology. Her plans were then to apply to medical school, but while working in the biology labs at UT, she met Felix Haas, who was then working on his doctorate in biology. Kay and Felix were married shortly thereafter, and Kay was faced with a momentous but not uncommon decision-should she continue a promising career or put it on hold and start a family? In later years she was content that she chose the latter pathway, and she was proud that she raised 3 sons to be honest, productive adults. She was also a very devoted mate, caring for Felix through a long and trying illness. Kay was a devoted Christian, and drew much strength from her faith, and for many years she was a member of the Palmer Episcopal Church in Houston. While in her 40's, after she had insured the success of her sons through her daily guidance, Kay fulfilled an earlier dream and went back to school, obtaining a masters degree in public health, specializing in epidemiology. She then made significant contributions in the research of breast cancer and the disease neuroblastoma. She is survived by her 3 loving sons, Michael, Steve, and Larry Haas and their families, 4 grandsons-Stephen, Caz, Zack, and Mac Haas, 1 granddaughter-Anya Haas, and 1 great-grandson-Addison Haas. She did her best, and for that we have all been blessed. The family will receive friends from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Wednesday, August 8, 2001, in the Beck Funeral Home, Round Rock location. Viewing will be from 12:00 P.M. to 2:00 P.M. Thursday, August 9, 2001 in the Memorial Oaks Mausoleum Chapel in Houston, Texas with Funeral Services at 2:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Alzheimer's Association, P.O. Box 4829, Austin, Texas 78765. Arrangements under the direction of Beck Funeral Home, Austin/Round Rock, (512) 244-3772.
