Yes, when I first saw the name spelled as Hackit, I thought for sure it was an error, then when I started to uncover all this paperwork, especially the guardianship papers where they made them correct it back to Hackit, I was suprised. They must have wanted it spelled the way it was from way back.
I've traced my Hackits back to Scotland. I believe they came from Ireland, but I haven't traced them back that far yet. I know for sure the mother, Anna Carson who married Robert Hackit was from Ireland. I've only traced them back to 1847 with the marriage license from Canongate Kirk in Edinburgh. They were actually coal miners in the New Monkland, Drumgelloch area. They came to the United States in Pennsylvania in 1872. They found coal mining jobs in Pennsylvania and then in Illinois. They tried farming in Kansas in the early 1880's but it didn't work out due to crop failures, so they went to South Dakota around 1886. They were mostly in Bancroft, Manchester, and DeSmet, South Dakota. None of my Hackit line is left in South Dakota. They have all died off in South Dakota now. But their sons have moved to Oregon, Seattle, Washington, and San Francisco. I've lost the family line in San Francisco and Seattle and I haven't been able to find anyone descended from them yet. So I just keep trying...
