Sarah Hackett has traditionally been identified as the wife of Malachi Powell, who appears on a 1779 tax list in Paxton (sometimes written Paxtang) township of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Malachi, Sarah and their first couple of children moved West, to Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, about 1780. In my review of submissions to the Latter Day Saints website, genforum, rootsweb, and various other websites (found via google), no one has identified Sarah's parents or siblings. I would like to propose as a THEORY, requiring further research to provide more evidence, that Sarah was a daughter of David Hackett and his unknown wife. David Hackett was a Scotch-Irish Presbyterian, and before the Revolution had settled near Duncannon (formerly Baskinsville), on the West side of the Susquehanna River, in present day Perry County, Pennsylvania (but still Cumberland County back then). Just across the Susquehanna, and less than a mile upriver is the mouth of Powell Creek, which enters from the East. Around Powell Creek is the Powell valley, including a "village" or town named Powell Valley (in present-day Dauphin County, but, back then, still Lancaster County). This area was part of Paxton township and, according to a county history, was named for the Powell family. Thus, geographic proximity is established for Sarah Hackett and Malachi Powell to meet and marry. In addition, I have not been able to find any other Hackett famiies (other than David and his children) in that area at that time, so by process of elimination, the odds are growing. Sarah (Hackett) Powell named a son David Powell, presumably for her father, David Hackett. Does anyone have any additional or different information about either Sarah Hackett, or the Sarah who was the wife of Malachi Powell, or about the children of David Hackett? Please contact me directly at duaneaboggs@hotmail.com. If you are interested in more detail about David Hackett, please see my companion posting of even date here on this Hackett Genforum message board. Notify Administrator about this message?
