HACKETT DEATHS 1855-1900 ( Bridgeton and Calton Districts)

Below are a list of Hackett deaths between 1855 and 1900 within the districts of Bridgeton and Calton in the East End of Glasgow. The adjoining districts of Calton and Bridgeton would cover no more than a half a mile radius each, so any deaths in the equally densely populated surrounding registration districts would not show here. It is certain that some Hacketts would have moved to nearby areas like the Gorbals and Tradeston just across the River Clyde or to areas such as Parkhead, Dennistoun or Camlachie.

It is very probable that when Martin Hackett and Catherine Reilly arrived in Glasgow from Fermanagh in 1846 that they both already had relatives in Glasgow, but I have never traced these. I cannot be certain that all of the Hacketts mentioned below are relatives but I would be surprised if some, if not most, were not. For that reason I have only highlighted in bold those Hacketts I am certain are relatives. The reason why I started in 1855 was because that was the year Birth Certificates became compulsory in Scotland, and before then deaths in Scotland were rarely recorded.

It is difficult to imagine suffering like this in one family but the probability is that this type of misery was common for many at that time and in particular amongst the poorest who were the Catholic Irish. Of the deaths shown below 21 were of children who died at less than 5 years old and only three reached the age of 70 or more, the so called allotted three score and ten.

If you are ever in Glasgow and are going up London Road from the city centre, then just about half a mile past Celtic Park is Dalbeth, where virtually all of my mothers Irish and Catholic ancestors and relatives who came to Glasgow are buried. There lie not only our Hacketts, but Boyles, Keans, Kellys, McMenemies, Reillys and many more.
