Joseph Hargis was born in Arkansas between 1794 and 1827. He was reputedly the blacksmith for Samuel Houston after whom he named his first son. I have information that says he died in 1866, however, his widow Susan Post-Hargis who was originally from Georgia is listed on the 1860 census in Benton County Arkansas. The "Story" is that she returned to Arkansas from the Nacogdoches, Texas area before the war. If you want information on Samuel Houston Hargis I have that, too. He lived in Texas and in Oklahoma.
