Hello, My name is ed harrigan and i can help you in your search for the harrigans from st. johnstone or in irish gaelic,Baile Seangeann.
i live in DERRY CITY, about 30 kilometres north of st. johnstone both of which locations are on the west bank of the river Foyle.
First of all,it is important to understand land division in Ireland which you may already know of course.
There are 32 counties in Ireland and each county is divided into a variable number of Parishes, each parish is divided into a variable number of districts called TOWNLANDS, These boundaries have been unchanged for the last 400 years.
Your area of interest lies in the Parish of Taughboyne in east Donegal and emcompasses several Townlands within the Parish.
It is also useful to consider that Irelands population was 9 million before the famine of 1844. Present population is 4.5 million.

A search of the primary records shows the following.

1826.
There are 5 harrigan families recorded, but head of household only given.
Bryan Harrigan St Johnstone
Bryan Harrigan St Johnstone
John Harrigan Crackadoo [townland]
Joseph Harrigan St. Johnstone
Widow Harrigan Dundee [townland]

1857.
Griffiths Valuation.

5 families recorded, head of household only.

Bryan Harrigan St Johnstone
Eliza Harrigan Carrickmore
Joseph Harrigan St Johnstone
Joseph Harrigan as above
Mathew Harrigan as above

1901 census

2 Families only recorded.

James Harrigan
Mary Harrigan [wife]
Patrick harrigan [son]

James was aged 27 and they lived in Feddyglass.

John Harrigan aged 60 living alone in St Johnstone.

Present time, only one family left, living in Carrickmore, about 4 kilometres south of St Johnstone.

The genealogy centre which covers your area of interest can be found at,www.irishroots.net
click on Donegal ancestry.

I will gladly provide any further help you may require.
