Fern,
Watkin's History of Casey Co is one source that list George R. as son of James Lawrence but the best document is James Lawrence's widows' claim for pension. Serena, maiden name Durham, listed her children under age 16 at James' death. George R. was first name listed.
As for the connection of James Lawrence and William M., I BELIEVE the 19 yr old James enumerated with Richard N. Hatter in 1850 Census of Casey Co is Richard's brother working as a shoemaker in Richard's blacksmith shop. Richard is listed only 11 yrs older than James.
