Hi Ellen,
Garrett does appear to be a family name. I found in the LDS data base a Garrett Healy born in Glin in 1805 and died in Australia ca. 1830. The next time the name pops up is my great-grandfather Richard's brother who came to the States ca. 1870. After that the name seems to disappear until my own father was born in 1916.
