ELIZABETH ARDELLA HENDON, born April 6, 1814, Pleasant Hill District, Oglethorpe Co., GA, was at home with her parents, JOHNSON HENDON and SARAH SCOGGINS in 1850, Walker Co., AL, married widower, WILLIAM McCOLLUM, born March 7, 1804, SC; died August 27, 1887, alledged to be a son of JAMES and SUZY McCOLLUM. WILLIAM's first wife, MARY PICKEL, born 1802, died March 21, 1849. He had issue by both wives. Of interest to HENDON researchers, his son by MARY PICKEL, named SAMUEL W. McCOLLUM, born 1830; died March 23, 1889, married MARTHA JANE HENDON, a daughter of HARRIS HENDON, (a brother to ELIZABETH ARDELLA HENDON) and SYNTHIA DEAN of Lawrence Co., AL.

ELIZABETH and WILLIAM had two children together, it appears from census records in Fayette Co., AL:

1) JAMES J. McCOLLUM, born 1853; died 1926; married Dec. 18, 1873, Fayette Co., AL, to SUSAN E. EASON.

2) MARTHA M. McCOLLUM, born 1855, Fayette Co., AL. No further information.

SAMUEL W. McCOLLUM and MARTHA JANE HENDON, neice to his stepmother, had at least six children:

1) LAVINDRY FRANCIS McCOLLUM. born March 1859, married September 13, 1881 to LUCINDA CASTLEBERRY.

2) Infant McCOLLUM

3) WILLIAM H. McCOLLUM

4) MARY SUSAN McCOLLUM, born July 1868; died November 9, 1948. Married GEORGE W. ALDRIDGE

5) JOHN S. H. McCOLLUM, b. 1872

6) THOMAS L. McCOLLUM, b. 1876

Do you have additional information? on your proposed further HENDON-McCOLLUM connection, re JOHN R. HENDON?

I have JOHN R. HENDON, born 25 April 1818, Oglethorpe Co., GA, son of JOHNSON HENDON and SARAH SCOGGIN, who first moved to Lawrence Co., AL, (near the Morgan Co., AL, line)then moved to Walker Co., AL. All children made the move to Walker except for son, HARRIS HENDON, who remained in Lawrence Co., for the 1850 census.

JOHN R. HENDON acquired to tracts of land in Walker Co., AL, once in 1835, Book 3, page 534 and again in 1840, Book 4, page 532. He would have been 17 when he acquired his first tract, This was near his father's earlier purchases.

He took a license to marry SUSAN McDANIEL on 8 Dec 1847, in Morgan Co., AL (Marriage Book A, page 536.) He would have been about 29 at this time.

I have never located him in Alabama on an 1850 census index. However. I did note a SUSAN J. HENDON on the census in Madison Co., AL, and two J. R. HENDONs in Greene Co., AL, pages 255 & 331, and one in Bedford Co., TN, which I haven't checked out.

I did not locate him on the 1860 census which left off so many families.

Finally, he appears on the 1870 Census in Lawrence Co., AL, age 52, married to MARY ?, age 35, with five children:

1) HARRIET HENDON, born 1855
2) EMMA E. HENDON, b. 1856
3) MARGARET L. HENDON, b. 1860
4) GEORGE H. HENDON, born 1865 and
5) MATTIE HENDON, born 1867.

Where there any additional children? What happened to JOHN R. and MARY (McCOLLUM?). Indeed son, GEORGE H. HENDON appears to be the one above. It is odd that that WILLIAM and ELIZABETH were not living with one of their on two children but I don't know much about them, only what is stated above. Thank you for sharing information.
Ann S. Grainger, Huntsville, AL.
