During my vacation last week, I visited the Winfield, AL library to search for information. I found the text of William McCollum's will, printed below. McCollum, William- 1857 W. Elizabeth A. Daughters: Martha M. and Sarah F. Sons: James I., George W., William C., and Benjamin Other Beneficiaries: Susan Halmark, wife of Wm. H. Hallmark; Mary Hendon, wife of John Hendon; Samuel Mc.Collum, and Benjamin McCollum. Executors: Elizabeth A. McCollum and Andrew J. McCaleb. Witnesses: James Killingsworth and Harrison Eason Excerpt: “I direct that my body be buried in a Christian manner suitable to my circumstances and condition….I hope for eternal salvation through Jesus Christ, whose religion I have professed, and as I humbly trust, enjoyed for some time……I devise to Susan, Mary, George, William C. and SSarah F. one horse a piece worth one hundred dollars or one hundred dollars. The Killingsworth family lived near William and Elizabeth McCollum. Ella (full name Martha Luella) who was my great grandfather's sister, married Sherman Killingsworth and had a child from that marriage. She later married Dr. Jeff Tackett and lived in Montgomery County Arkansas, near George H. Hendon. George H. actually went to Texas before coming back to Arkansas. His wife, Elmina Dickson was listed on the census in Northeast Texas. As for John R. Hendon, I believe he married Mary McCollum, second. There are some strange relationships as you mentioned. Elizabeth was the sister of John R. Hendon. When she married William McCollum, she became the stepmother of Mary McCollum Hendon and mother-in-law of John R. Hendon, who was also her brother. If you run across information about why George and Ella would have moved in with their grandfather and what happened to John R. and Mary Hendon, please let me know.
