Charlie
Please do not apologize for the long post, it contains much valuable information.

I apologize, in re-reading my notes re: Elizabeth Ann Hill Higdon. I do not have confirmation of her burial in St. Benedict's Cemetery. I have a statement from her Widow's Pension application:
'Mrs. Higdon died on the 2nd day of March 1866 + this date is taken from her tomb or headstone in the Burying Ground at the Catholic Church near Grayson Springs, Grayson County Kentucky.' but it is not clear whether this is St. Benedict's or another Catholic Cemetery in Grayson Co.

The statement further reads: 'We the undersigned hereby state that we were well acquainted with J.T. Higdon, previous to his enlistment in the Union Army + also state that he died during the War, leaving a Widow by name of Elizabeth A. Higdon and one son by the name of Bennet Higdon.' and 'This son Bennet Higdon is still living, Mrs. Elizabeth A. Higdon never married after the Death of her husband. Bennet is the only child living.' The statement was dated 1877. This is what leads me to believe that Ignatius, the other son of John Thomas, died 1860-1877 probably bef. 1870.

Elisa Higdon Walters emailed me with information about some Higdon graves she photographed in St. Benedict's Cemetery. She wrote:
I have pictures of the grave of your Bennet and Margaret Ellen. They share an obelisk shaped stone with their names on opposite sides at St Benedict Catholic Cemetery, Wax, Kentucky. His brother, James Ignatius and wife (Margaret's sister) Mary Elizabeth share an identical stone very near in the same cemetery. His death date on the stone is his birthday, March 3 1906 so I don't know about the death date you spoke of being between 1860-1870.

I do love a good mystery!

I just received copies of Ignatius Higdon's service record from the War of 1812. I would be happy to fwd. scans, if you are interested. It states that he was with Cramer's Detachment, a Pvt. in Capt. John Wailes' Co. of Infantry Maryland Militia, for Aug. 29 to Oct. 19, 1814. His place of residence was 'Montg y County', he was discharged at Washington City which was 40 miles from his residence, on Oct. 17th allowing 2 days for his return. He was paid $13.67. The record includes a copy of a note requesting his payment signed by Ignatius Higdon and William Bennett.

I do not see record of pension application or land grant, but would be grateful for any information you are willing to share.

Diane
