Thank you for posting. We appreciate the help. Our oral tradition says that our NA ancestor married a Hilton girl and took her name. The Long John Mabe family of Stokes NC says that wife Lucinda Hilton was one of the daughters of Thomas the Indian and a Bettie Hilton. Our family lost the Hilton name during the Civil War. Up to that time they all were Hiltons.
Thomas the Indian Hilton appears in Lunenburg VA on Terrible Creek. Then on the Dan River in NC. Which is only a few miles.
We have been grabbing at straws and slowly putting this families history together. We were told that we were Cherokee growing up but never expected to find a male linage still intact. I understand that it is really rare for a male line to survive the Wars and disease.
We would love to find the Hilton girl that Thomas married. Old Beecham Halten is a story in Himself. I don't know where he came from. He is in some of the Moravian stories and served as a go between them and the CHerokee. According to some he should have been born about 1705 or so. Our Thomas could be 1710 - 1720. One son Abraham Hilton was out of Henrico for the Rev. War. It says that he was born in 1843. I would think a little later than that.
We have found about 150 Cherokee applications for this family. A whole court case with commissioner James Baker, in 1922 at Asheville, NC with the Famous Helton boys (fiddlers, banjo, guitar players) for membership in the Eastern Band of Cherokees. As we discovered the applications, we struggled at first and then realized that they all go back to the same original family in NC. At least that is the truth for the different Helton / Hiltons that have DNA tested.
Now the DNA tells us for sure they weren't lying. We could use some help from our old cousins out of NC. Thanks again Greg.
